Reflective Stainless Steel Roof Shell

A reflective stainless steel roof shell formed to a curved roof geometry. At this level of reflectivity the surface stops behaving like a colour and starts behaving like a mirror, so the roof takes its appearance from the sky, the weather and the buildings around it.

What reflection does to a form
A reflective shell reveals curvature that a matte surface would flatten. Because the reflected image distorts across the curve, the geometry becomes legible even when the roof is seen against a bright sky, which is why this finish is used where the roof form itself is the statement.
Fabrication demands
Reflection also exposes the fabrication. Any inconsistency in panel curvature, joint spacing or edge alignment appears as a break in the reflected image. Forming tolerances are therefore set tighter than for a brushed roof, and the panel layout is planned so joints fall where the reflection can carry them.
Right level of reflectivity
Mirror is not the only option and is not always the correct one. The appropriate level is confirmed against the project environment, because surrounding glare, maintenance access and the intended reading of the form all affect the choice.
