What colour tolerance (Delta E) applies to PVD panels?
For PVD-coated panels the working tolerance is Delta E 1.0-1.5, measured batch to batch against a retained approved reference. Delta E below 1.0 applies to the base-metal finishes - mirror, hairline, vibration, sandblast and anti-fingerprint - not to rich PVD colours.
What Delta E measures
The perceptual distance between two colours under defined lighting. Around 1 is the threshold a trained eye can detect in a side-by-side comparison; above that, panels read as different colours on a facade.
Why PVD sits in a wider band
The colour comes from a vacuum-deposited layer whose thickness and composition shift slightly with every run. The wider band is a statement of what is controllable, not a relaxed standard.
How the band is held
Fixed coating parameters per batch, spectrophotometer measurement against the retained reference, and the reference kept for the whole project so later phases are compared with the same physical panel.
| Surface family | Delta E, batch to batch |
|---|---|
| Mirror, hairline, vibration, sandblast, anti-fingerprint | Below 1.0 |
| PVD colour: gold, rose gold, black titanium, champagne, custom | 1.0-1.5 |
| Antique and aged finishes | 1.0-1.5 |
| Physical forming: water ripple, hammered, etched, printed, perforated | Not measured |
Judge colour on the approved physical panel under the project lighting. A screen rendering and a photograph both shift hue, and neither is an acceptance criterion.
