Does PVD coating change the surface finish?

Update Time:2026/10/29

PVD is applied over a base finish, so the substrate roughness and grain still read through the colour. A colour is therefore always specified as base finish plus PVD colour, never as a colour on its own.

Two different products

PVD over a mirror-polished base gives a coloured mirror. PVD over No. 4 or hairline gives a coloured brushed surface. They share a colour name and nothing else.

What the coating adds

Colour and a harder top layer. Gloss shifts slightly because a film has been added over the grain, so the coated panel never matches the uncoated base exactly.

What to approve

A physical sample of the exact base finish and colour combination, under the project lighting. Approving a colour swatch without the base finish is the most common PVD approval error.
