Is No. 4 or hairline finish better for handrails?
Both are correct, and the difference is grain length rather than quality. No. 4 is a shorter, denser grain; hairline (HL) is a longer, continuous grain. The choice is made on the drawing and under the lighting where the rail will be seen.
What drives the choice
Rail length and profile, the angle of light on the handrail, and the finish of the surfaces next to it. A long continuous grain reads calmer on a long run; a shorter grain reads tighter on short returns.
What to do before deciding
Order a sample of each in the actual grade, view them at one metre and at three metres, and look at them under the project lighting rather than office lighting.
What matters more than either
Grain continuity across bends and joints. A perfectly specified grain that changes direction at a bend is more visible than the difference between the two finishes.
