Is 316L required for coastal facades?
Not by any code, but it is the professional default within a few kilometres of the sea and in high-pollution industrial zones. 304 pits early in those conditions, and replacing panels on a completed facade costs far more than the grade upgrade would have.
How to judge the exposure
Distance to the shoreline, prevailing onshore wind, whether the elevation is sheltered by another building, height above ground, and whether salt deposits can be washed off.
What matters as much as the grade
Crevice-free detailing, drainage so water cannot sit, no carbon steel contact, and a wash regime the facility team will actually run.
The defensible exception
A sheltered elevation inland of a ridge, with a documented wash cycle, can justify 304. The justification has to be written down, not assumed.
