When is 304 stainless steel good enough?
For inland interiors and general atmospheric exposure, 304 is the default and it is fully adequate: elevator interiors, wall cladding, trim, column covers, food-contact surfaces and commercial fixtures. The upgrade to 316L is justified by the environment, not by the importance of the project.
Three upgrade triggers
Chlorides within a few kilometres of the coast, de-icing salt on a street-level facade, and industrial or urban pollution that deposits sulphur compounds on the surface.
What to check before deciding
Distance to the sea, prevailing onshore wind, whether the elevation is sheltered, height above ground, and how often the surface can realistically be washed.
The cost logic
304 keeps the budget in the cladding package. Spending the grade differential on better detailing, crevice-free joints and a wash regime often buys more service life than the grade alone.
