What does the "L" in 316L mean?
"L" stands for low carbon: a maximum of 0.03% against 0.08% in standard 316. Lower carbon prevents chromium carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone during welding, and that is what protects a welded detail from intergranular corrosion.
Where it matters on a facade
Welded sub-frames, welded corners and returns, site repairs, and any panel that is cut and re-welded after coating. These are the locations where carbon content decides service life.
What it does not change
Appearance, finish options, flatness and fire rating are identical to standard 316. The letter is a metallurgical designation, not a visual one.
How to verify it
The mill certificate states carbon content and heat number. Check that the heat number on the certificate matches the marking on the sheets you receive.
