Does PVD colour fade in strong sunlight?

Update Time:2026/10/29

The colour layer is mineral, not an organic pigment film, so it does not fade through pigment breakdown the way paint does. On a sun-facing facade the practical risk is not fading but batch consistency, which is why every batch is measured against the retained approved reference.

What actually changes the look

Soiling and dust film, fingerprints on a dark colour, micro-scratches that dull the gloss, and local damage that exposes the substrate. These read as colour change at a distance.

What to specify

Base finish plus PVD colour as a single specification, Delta E 1.0-1.5 batch to batch, and a retained reference panel held for the duration of the project.

Maintenance that keeps it

pH-neutral wash, soft cloth or brush, no abrasive pads, no strong acid or chloride cleaners, and a wash interval set by the deposition rate on the elevation.
